Application Period

The deadline for application is specified in each project description. Please find further details in the Current PhD Vacancies section.

If you want to apply but cannot not meet the deadline, please contact the ERIM Doctoral Office before submitting your application. If you have any other questions, please consult the FAQ section.

Application Procedure

The application needs to be submitted online and, after this, to be sent by regular mail. For the online application, you will need to upload several files. Note that you will have to have electronic versions available of most of the required documents, for example, scans. Only one file per required document is allowed, so that you may have to merge several documents into one. Uploaded files are preferably in the pdf format (a free pdf printer can be found at CutePDF), although MS Word and jpeg is also accepted.

Prepare the following documents. Only applications with all the necessary documents enclosed will be considered. It is also indicated which ones also need to be uploaded in the online application form.

1. Photocopy of the page(s) of passport with name, date and place of birth, and expiry date of the passport.

2. For non-Dutch citizens who are in possession of a Dutch residence permit card, a copy of the residence permit card is also required.

3. Résumé ( curriculum vitae) in English, including all personal data.

4. A certified copy of all academic diplomas in the original language (certified copies should bear the original sign and original seal of the issuing office). If you are still in process of completing your current degree programme and do not have a diploma yet, you will need to provide it as soon as it is available.

5. A certified translation of academic diplomas in English, French, German or Dutch (if applicable). If a translation is not available from the issuing office, a translation bearing the original sign of the sworn translator will be accepted.

6. An original or certified copy of all full transcripts (lists of grades) in the original language (certified copies should bear the original sign and original seal of the issuing office). If you are still in process of completing your current degree programme and do not have a final list of grades yet, you will need to provide a preliminary grade list first. It should be an official document issued or verified by your registrars office or examination administration. It should not be older that one month old at the moment of application. If you submit a preliminary grade list, you will still need to provide the official one as soon as it is available.

7. A certified translation of the transcripts in English, French, German or Dutch (if applicable). If a translation is not available from the issuing office, a translation bearing the original sign of the sworn translator will be accepted.

8. Two academic letters of recommendation (business letters of recommendation cannot replace the academic letters of recommendation). There is no special format for the letters of recommendation. You will specify the e-mail addresses of the referees in the online application form. They will be invited by ERIM to submit their letter of recommendation.

12. If you are applying for an Open PhD Project, then in addition to points 1-11 you need to submit the following:

12a. A motivation essay on why you want to pursue a PhD and on your own research project.

12b. An electronic copy of the master thesis. If the thesis is not available in English, then provide us with an abstract of ca. 300-700 words.

Online Application Form

Having collected all the required documents, every applicant will need to complete the online ERIM Doctoral Programme Application form and print the resulting form. Do not forget to sign the printed form!
