Zhengguo Gu
2 nd year ERIM Research Master, specialisation in Marketing

"Studying at ERIM as a research master student is definitely a wonderful experience. I have about 20 highly-talented and ambitious colleagues to talk about my research interests and share my life with. The ERIM research master programme is well designed and quite flexible - the courses can be tailored to meet individual needs. Besides, ERIM encourages us to work with professors from both Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) and Erasmus School of Economics (ESE), which is a unique opportunity as we, students, actually get involved in the top-tier research at RSM and ESE. I enjoy my life here at ERIM, and I am glad that I decided to study here."

Basak Demirtas
RSM PhD Candidate in Information Management, ERIM Research Master alumna

"After my bachelor in Industrial Engineering, I doubted between an academic and a business career. I didn’t want to apply directly to a PhD programme, because I thought studying 4 more years was a big commitment. Then I learned about the ERIM research master programme, which offers a master degree in my specialization, but also concentrates on research. My biggest doubt about continuing in the academia was my inability to do research. This master programme made me realize that I was really not able to execute a research project properly, simply because no one had taught me how to do this before. It was during MPhil that I had a chance to work on several research projects as a student assistant and this helped me experience real research and understand what I like to do in the future. This, together with the research seminars, gave me the opportunity to find my current PhD project. Now I can say I am really pleased and proud to be part of the ERIM programme at Erasmus University. I hope that I can continue my career at ERIM also after I finish my PhD."

Mariano (“Pitòsh”) Heyden II
RSM PhD candidate in Strategy; ERIM Research Master alumnus

"Being an ERIM research master student meant being surrounded by a culturally diverse set of young ambitious minds in constant interaction with some of the brightest scholars of organizations. The programme was very competitive, as there is a standard of excellence imposed by the professors and enforced by your peers. The small class sizes, the flexibility to customize the curriculum to my own research interests, and accessibility of faculty members turned out to be some of the nicer features of the research master here at ERIM. The intensity of this programme further provided me with a running start for my PhD, having completed all the compulsory coursework during my master programme. The programme is very demanding, and you will learn to love coffee! However, it was also surprisingly social, as events were frequently organized to stimulate informal contact among students, and many deep friendships were cultivated. During this period I also served as Chairman of the ERIM Research Master Council, which provided me with the invaluable experience of being involved in representing the interests of my fellow students at ERIM."

ERIM Research Master Student Association

The ERIM research master Programme has its own student association, MφΣ, that initiates and co-ordinates academic, social and (inter)cultural activities. MφΣ organizes social activities together with PhD candidates and academic staff, so that MPhil students have sufficient opportunities to prepare themselves for the role of PhD candidate and a further academic career. If you are interested in the programme, we can also give you an impression from the student perspective. To contact MφΣ, please send an e-mail to MPhilCouncil@rsm.nl.
