Fuzzy Criteria for Feature Selection On Tuesday March 22, Susana Vieira (Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal) will present "Fuzzy Criteria for Feature Selection". In her talk, Susana Vieira stresses that the use of fuzzy decision making may improve the performance of real-world optimization problems, which often deal with multiple different - mostly conflicting and/or contradictory - criteria. Fuzzy decision making allows for an easier and suitable description of the confluence of the different criteria.

Distributed Programming using Hadoop On Wednesday March 9 ( rescheduled: TBA), Evert Lammers, consultant at SARA, the national high performance computing and e-Science Support Center, will present "Distributed Programming using Hadoop", which serves as an introduction to Hadoop, a software framework for distributed programming. The framework and computing cluster are freely available for researchers and students at universities, as their projects often require a lot of computational power. After a brief introduction to Hadoop, Evert Lammers will continue with a hands-on session for distributed programming and computing in Hadoop by analyzing a large data set. Some Java knowledge is preferred, as Hadoop is based on Java. Note that also MATLAB code can be run in a distributed way using Hadoop. Don't forget to bring your laptop!

Formal Concept Analysis and Fuzzy Logics On Thursday February 17, Marcos Cintra (São Paulo University, São Carlos, Brazil) presented "Formal Concept Analysis and Fuzzy Logics". Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) is a mathematical theory which uses formal contexts and concept lattices to model the concept of "concepts". It is used for data analysis, knowledge representation, and information management. The fuzzy logic and fuzzy set theories were introduced by Prof. Zadeh in the 1960s and are consolidated in various areas of the human knowledge. Fuzzy logics have also been used in conjunction with FCA in order to provide a way of handling continuous attributes. In this presentation, FCA and fuzzy logics were briefly introduced, as well as some applications.

An Econometric Approach to Neural Network Model Selection for Financial Time Series Analysis On Tuesday November 23, Dr. Nikos Thomaidis (University of the Aegean, Chios Island, Greece) presented "An Econometric Approach to Neural Network Model Selection for Financial Time Series Analysis" at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. The purpose of this talk was to present a family of neural network (NN)-GARCH models that jointly parametrise the mean and the variance of the conditional distribution. Dr. Nikos Thomaidis demonstrated how this flexible modelling framework can accommodate most of the stylised facts reported about financial prices or rates of return (nonlinear trends, asymmetric GARCH effects and non-gaussian errors).

New intelligence on future energy markets The face of Europe’s energy supply is set to change. If latest plans by nine European countries go ahead, the North Sea could become home to an intricate network of undersea cables – part of Europe’s first supergrid for renewable energy. Initiatives of this type signal a marked departure from the traditional model of energy supply management, says Wolfgang Ketter. Until now a few large companies have held centre stage in each country, operating in a largely top-down, command-and-control fashion.
