Are women more loyal customers than men?
For almost every company the retention of customers and the creation of customer loyalty is a huge driver of profits. If an organisation were able to increase customer retention by just 1%, such an improvement would have a significant impact on profitability.

Brand versus image
On May 29, Steven Sweldens has defended his PhD thesis entitled “Evaluative Conditioning 2.0: Direct versus Associative Transfer of Affect to Brands”. Brands become better liked when they appear in positive contexts. For example, brands can sponsor rock concerts, appear with adored celebrities, or simply be perceived in combination with beautiful images in advertisements. Repeated co-occurrences or pairings of brands with such positive affective stimuli make the brand more well-liked. These are some of the conclusions of Steven Sweldens’s PhD thesis entitled “Evaluative Conditioning 2.0: Direct versus Associative Transfer of Affect to Brands”.

Demand Management in E-fulfillment
On April 2, Niels Agatz has defended his PhD thesis entitled “Demand Management in E-fulfillment”. Internet retailers are in a unique position to adjust, in real-time, the product and service offering to the customer and to change the corresponding prices. While this flexibility provides a vast potential for demand management to enhance profitability, exploiting them requires sophisticated decision support. The various interrelated trade-offs between customer preferences, incentives, and operational considerations are much too complex for simple intuition to suffice. The number of quantitative models currently available in the literature to support demand management in e-fulfillment is rather limited.

Dynamics and Competition in Charitable Giving
On January 22, Merel van Diepen has defended her PhD thesis entitled “Dynamics and Competition in Charitable Giving”. In her thesis, Merel van Diepen studies the effects of charitable direct mail requests on donations, as the public opinion appears to become more and more dominated by negative aspects. She studies whether society’s current opinions translate to actual donating behavior and provide socially relevant insights to charities to guide their mailing strategies and help increase their revenues.

Informedness and Customer-Centric Revenue Management
On Friday, January 16, Ting Li has defended her PhD thesis entitled “Informedness and Customer-Centric Revenue Management”. The past decade has witnessed an increased application of revenue management, where firms use various quantitative analysis techniques such as customer segmentation and pricing optimization to deal with capacity allocation and demand management. In particular, the demonstrated success in firms such as airlines and rental cars is encouraging scholars and practitioners alike to explore the possibilities of benefiting from revenue management. Yet despite the success in other transportation firms, public transport operators (PTOs) face difficulties in fully taking advantage of revenue management. Although PTOs have a strong need to reduce peak load passenger demand and increase capacity utilization, there are practical limitations that prevent them from exercising revenue management. PTOs state that “it is difficult to implement a profitable operating environment where the entire business strategy is based on ‘open access’ system for flexible travelling, and revenue management is nearly impossible for us.”

Real-time Planning Support: A Task-Technology Fit Perspective
On December 19, Elfriede Krauth has defended her PhD thesis entitled “Real-time Planning Support: A Task-Technology Fit Perspective”. Transport planning is in some aspects not unlike surfing. Logistics is about delivering the right product in the right quantity, at the right place and at the right time. The unpredictable and volatile demand gives planners little time to adjust plans and ensure high efficiency. While there are decision support systems available for calculating the shortest transport route or the optimal order-resource assignment, we know little about how to give this advice in the chaos and unpredictability that characterize the decision making situation in real-time transport.
