Thesis title:
Studying Multiple Media Use: A Network Multiplexity Approach

Description:
This study examines social (network) influences on the use of multiple communication media. In addition, the impact of media use consistency amongst employees on their perceived effectiveness of media use is studied. Where past research on social (network) influences mainly investigated only one type of network, the communication network, this study analyzes the ‘information exchange’, ‘decision making’ and ‘workplace friendship’ networks. The communication media repertoire perspective is used to identify employees’ routine use of multiple media in relation to their work activities. Findings indicate that influences exerted on media use differ across the different types of social network relationships and social network positions. Amongst other findings, results show that employees’ centrality in the ‘information exchange’ network is a positive predictor of employees’ media use consistency with the communication media repertoire (of the department), whereas the centrality of employees in the ‘workplace friendship’ network is a negative predictor. Furthermore, employees’ media use consistency appears to be a negative predictor of perceived media use effectiveness.
