Business Process, Logistics & Information Systems (LIS)

A significant part of total product costs derive from physical distribution and logistics, especially when production is organized globally and components are sourced from around the world. At the same time markets demand more customized solutions together with a more competitive logistical performance, making the logistical challenge dramatically more complex. All this requires more sophisticated approaches to transportation, logistics and their coordination. But it also offers increasing opportunities for competitive advantage through excellent knowledge-based performance in those areas.

The LIS research programme aims to contribute to world-class performance in management of business processes, logistics and information systems, through excellent academic research and collaboration with leading firms around the world. The fact that one of the largest ports in the world is next door further supports its extensive network and the visibility and influence of its expertise. The LIS programme brings together a wide range of knowledge from management science, economics, mathematics and computer science but also from social sciences. e.g. concerning the challenges of collaboration in virtual organizations and the support of social networks, or technology-enabled cross-cultural business communication. It studies fundamental and age old aspects of business collaboration, e.g. the gradual development of trust between business partners under various circumstances, but also investigates the implications of the latest technology e.g. the wide deployment of RFID and the proliferation of the Internet of Things, or the potential of the Ontology Web Language (OWL) on the management of value chains. LIS researchers constitute a dynamic group of talented individuals, from able students to widely awarded seniors, with a leading position in an exciting area of research.
