On the psychology behind the financial crisis
Posted on 09-06-2010David De Cremer, Professor of Behavioural Business Ethics has published a book on the psychological aspects of the current financial crisis. The book is called “Als goede mensen slechte dingen doen” (When good people behave badly). The drift of his story: we assume a rational image of people and their behaviour in the financial market. However, irrational behaviour seems more often to be the case. We have to understand why ethics often is a case of irrational behaviour, which means that we are a merely limited homo moralis. This insight can help us to make ethical leadership – necessary to tackle the future with confidence – a sustainable challenge.

Transitions to Sustainable Development
Posted on 11-02-2010Over the past few decades, there has been a growing concern about the social and environmental risks which have come along with the progress achieved through a variety of mutually intertwined modernization processes. In recent years these concerns are transformed into a widely-shared sense of urgency, partly due to events such as the various pandemics threatening livestock, and increasing awareness of the risks and realities of climate change, and the energy and food crises. This sense of urgency includes an awareness that our entire social system is in need of fundamental transformation. But like the earlier transition between the 1750s and 1890s from a pre-modern to a modern industrial society, this second transition is also a contested one. Sustainable development is only one of many options. This book addresses the issue on how to understand the dynamics and governance of the second transition dynamics in order to ensure sustainable development. It will be necessary reading for students and scholars with an interest in sustainable development and long-term transformative change.

An Introduction to Models for the Energy Markets
Posted on 05-01-2010Transportation, storage, seasonality and settlement issues hardly figure in financial markets and their modelling. Yet, they are crucial to the working of energy markets and, as a result, traditional financial models must be customised to give useful results. More broadly, traders and portfolio managers, who make crucial decisions based on the output of these models, should be familiar with their power and their limitations. Ronald Huisman has combined both academic and practical approaches in "An Introduction to Models for the Energy Markets" to provide the reader with a clear exposition of the thinking behind the range of models used today in energy finance - from the most basic to the cutting edge.

Innovating for Sustainability
Posted on 08-12-2009One of the challenges met by green entrepreneurs and product developers who have tried to develop more sustainable products is that efforts to have better products in environmental terms do not always translate into effective business cases. The purpose of this book is a better understanding of the implications of environmental issues in new product development. Through an empirical study in the human powered vehicle sector, Luca Berchicci examines how and to what extent the environmental ambition of product developers and managers influences the way new products and services are developed. The understanding of this phenomenon is particularly important since managers are encouraged and/or motivated to undertake environmental new product development projects.

The Handbook of Global Outsourcing
Posted on 06-11-2009The global offshore outsourcing market for IT and business services exceeded $55 billion in 2008 and some estimates suggest an annual growth rate of 20% over the next five years. Furthermore, over 200 firms from the Forbes 2000 companies and 50 per cent of the Fortune Global 500 had offshored IT and business process activities through captive centres, making a total of about $9bn of business. The phenomenon of offshoring and offshore-outsourcing is certainly expanding. It has become increasingly important to understand the phenomenon, not least as a basis for suggesting what directions it will take, its impacts, how it has been conducted, and how its management can be better facilitated.

An efficient and effective management of distribution logistics is a key issue for the success of a company. There are many different problems to deal with, from facility location to transportation, to inventory management, and, most important, to the integration and optimization of the entire logistics network. Quantitative methods provide relevant tools to support decisions, from strategic to operational, in distribution logistics.

Standards Battles in Open Source Software
Posted on 27-01-2009In many ways, the rise of the open source web browser Firefox contradicts common wisdom and expectations. An industry with network effects, as is the case in the web browser industry, should follow the rationale of “the strong grows stronger, and the weak becomes weaker”. This means that in the long run, a single dominant technology will prevail that prevents competing technologies from obtaining a foothold in the market. We can therefore explain the victory of Internet Explorer (IE) over Netscape mainly because IE was bundled with the Windows operating system; however, we still need to understand the rise of Firefox in a ‘winner-takes-all market’. Could the characteristics of Firefox, an open source software web browser, explain this unexpected success?

Private Equity and Management Buy-outs
Posted on 22-05-2008As private equity markets have gained in importance worldwide over the last decade there has been a growing debate about the role of private equity in the firm and society at large. Private equity firms are facing different challenges, notably: increased pressure to be more transparent in their value creation and governance role with regard to shareholders and employees of the buy-out firm; increased pressure to be more transparent about the short- and long-term economic and social effects, for instance their role in the upside potential of buy-outs and impact on human resources management; increased pressure to be transparent about the determinants of exit strategies; increased pressure to test the acceptability of financial leverage in the financial structures of buy-outs; increased importance of their intermediary role as adviser to vendors and buyers in family buy-outs; increased pressure to combine financial expertise with technological and management control expertise in buy-out firms. For the first time the broad issues now facing private equity and buy-outs are brought together through the contributions in this volume.

Handbook Of Research On Entrepreneurship Policy
Posted on 15-08-2007This unique Handbook provides a solid foundation for essential study in the nascent field of entrepreneurship policy research. This foundation is initially developed via the exploration of two significant propositions underpinning the nature of entrepreneurship policy research. The first is that entrepreneurship has emerged as a bona fide focus of public policy, particularly with respect to economic growth and employment creation. The second is that neither scholars nor policy makers are presently equipped to understand the public policy role for entrepreneurship. The contributors - experienced scholars, specialist researchers and dynamic policy makers thus grapple with novel questions of considerable policy relevance that few have previously posed. The Handbook therefore provides some of the first crucial, systematic analyses of important issues, and key questions to be raised in order to move entrepreneurship policy forward are also presented.Written by academics and practitioners drawing examples from both North America and Europe, this stimulating new Handbook is a prerequisite for students, scholars and practitioners in the incipient world of entrepreneurship policy.
