In progress Same-Day Delivery: Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract

Trends in e-commerce and developments in information and communication technologies differentiate
the last-mile delivery systems. Novel mathematical models have proven their value
in supporting practical operations in many areas, like vehicle routing and pick-up and delivery
problems. However, new technologies and trends in delivery expectation require even
more sophisticated delivery systems. In this project, we envision developing new mathematical
models for the same-day delivery environment. Furthermore, we delineate the concept
\crowdshipping" in this context. The models will help both designers and practitioners to
create optimal last-mile delivery systems and control methods to improve the performance
of the systems and, on the other hand, enrich the current literature by new problems, new
mathematical formulations and solution approaches.
