Theme A: Corporate Sustainability

Business organizations are now amongst the most dominant and powerful social entities on Earth and are essential in efforts towards sustainable socio-ecological systems. Corporate sustainability calls for companies to be managed in ways that help society to live within our Planetary Boundaries and a socially just space to prosper.

Corporate sustainability requires firms to restore or operate on the interest of ecological and social capital rather than degrading these foundations of life, and make decisions for both the short and long term time horizons.  This necessitates companies put creating societal value at the core of their business.  Firms need to understand sustainability challenges such as climate change and wealth inequality, identify their current contribution and form deliberate goals and strategies to transform their operations.

Our research considers corporate sustainability through a variety of theoretical lenses such as process theory and systems thinking.   Our work seeks to give a more nuanced understanding to the theoretical conceptualization of corporate sustainability and offer insight to how companies may implement it in practice.

On 12-13th 2016 July we co-hosted the ‘Sustainable Cities Conference’typo3/ at Erasmus University, and we are part of the organizing committee for  ‘The 9th Annual Alliance for Research on Corporate Sustainability (ARCS) Research Conference to be held at Rotterdam School of Management, Netherlands on 14-16 June 2017.
