Abstract

American Professor of Psychology Alice H. Eagly will be presented with an honorary doctorate by Erasmus University Rotterdam on Thursday 8 November 2012 at a festive event celebrating the 99th anniversary of the Dutch university. Prof. Eagly will receive the honour for her authoritative work on gender and leadership.

The celebrations for Erasmus University’s 99th anniversary are being organised by the university’s business and management faculty, Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM). This year’s theme is “Women Mean Business” and an expert debate during the event will explore the reasons why increasing numbers of women are landing top-level positions and female leadership is now getting more recognition, and yet most people prefer to see a man in managerial and executive jobs. Women still encounter many barriers in trying to climb the corporate or organisational ladder.

Alice Eagly is Professor of Psychology, Faculty Fellow at the Institute for Policy Research and Professor of Management & Organizations at Northwestern University in Illinois, USA. The leading psychologist is to be honoured for her trailblazing work in the field of gender and leadership. Prof. Eagly dismisses the frequently-mentioned “glass ceiling” as the factor which holds women back. Instead, she uses the metaphor of a labyrinth in which women encounter many obstacles at all hierarchical levels. Prof. Eagly has been awarded with several honours in recent years.

Speakers

The laudation for Prof. Eagly will be given by honorary doctoral advisor Prof. Daan van Knippenberg, who holds a chair in Organisational Behaviour at RSM. Other speakers are Ruth Cairnie, the Executive Vice-President of Strategy and Planning at Royal Dutch Shell, and Prof. Steef van de Velde, Dean of RSM. In his speech, Prof. Van Knippenberg will discuss the future of management education.

The honorary doctorate ceremony will be preceded by a meeting of experts, comprising Prof. Eagly; Meiny Prins, CEO of Priva; Pauline van der Meer Mohr, President of Erasmus University’s Executive Board; and Sven Smit, a Director at McKinsey & Company’s Amsterdam office.

The meeting of experts will start at 12.30 hrs., and the honorary doctorate ceremony commences at 15.15 hrs. The language used is English. Please register to attend the meeting of experts or the entire event through this link.
