Agency Problems in the Mutual Fund Industry

Nowadays, a substantial number of investors rely on mutual funds to manage a portion of their
wealth, but the fund managers do not always act in the best interest of the investors. This
research project will study these agency problems in the mutual fund industry. This is done
by investigating 1) the consequences of so-called tournament behaviour on the fund's portfolio
composition and future performance, 2) a potential new driver for excessive risk-taking, namely,
aliated funds of mutual funds, and 3) the awareness of mutual fund investors of these agency
problems. This research project can prove useful in identifying the welfare impact of agency
problems in the mutual fund industry and potential critical points of attention for policy makers.
