Maurizio Montone is an assistant professor of finance at the Erasmus School of Economics. He also holds positions as an associate member of the Erasmus Research Institute of Management, a member of the Erasmus Center for Behavioral Finance, and a candidate research fellow of the Tinbergen Institute.

 

Before joining Erasmus University, he was a research fellow at the Center for Studies in Economics and Finance. Previously, he was also a visiting scholar at the London School of Economics Financial Markets Group, the University of Miami, Indiana University, and the Einaudi Institute for Economics and Finance.

 

His main research interests are behavioral finance, asset pricing, and corporate finance, both theoretical and empirical, with a focus on market efficiency. He has the privilege to work with a network of prestigious co-authors, which includes senior academics and winners of the NWO Vici and Vidi grants.

 

His papers have featured in conference programs and seminars of leading institutions, such as the University of Oxford, Queen Mary University of London, Tel Aviv University, University College Dublin, VU Amsterdam, the University of Sussex, the London School of Economics, the University of Miami, and Indiana University, among others.

 

He is the instructor and coordinator of the graduate seminar in behavioral finance and the minor in behavioral finance. Previously, he taught courses and seminars both at the graduate and undergraduate level on a variety of subjects, including asset pricing, political economy, market microstructure, and derivatives.

 

As a holder of the University Teaching Qualification, Maurizio is a certified teacher. Throughout the years, he has consistently received high student evaluations, and notably, he was among his Department’s top-three seminar instructors in 2016.

 

Maurizio holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Cassino, Italy, where he was admitted as top of the list with a perfect score (120/120). He defended his thesis on “Asset pricing and mental accounting” under the supervision of Marco Pagano, a world-renowned financial economist and winner of a prestigious ERC Advanced Grant.

 

As a doctoral student, Maurizio was the recipient of a travel grant from the American Finance Association, and a number of fellowships from the Center for Studies in Economics and Finance, the University of Miami, the Einaudi Institute for Economics and Finance, and the University of Cassino.

 

Earlier in his academic career, he was one of the four finalists for the International Atlantic Economic Society’s Best Undergraduate Paper competition, where he was the only contestant from continental Europe.

 

In addition to his PhD, Maurizio holds a bachelor’s degree in financial institutions management, an advanced degree in finance (“Laurea Specialistica”, two-year program), and a second-level master’s degree in economics and finance at the University of Naples “Federico II”, all with honors.

 

As part of his graduations, he received a special mention for the academic career and the quality of the thesis work, and an outstanding student award. In particular, he was the first student to obtain a perfect GPA in the advanced degree in finance since the 2001 reform.

 

During his graduate studies, Maurizio worked as a research assistant for Marco Pagano and Facundo Piguillem, and attended summer schools at Centro de Estudios Monetarios y Financieros, the Center for Studies in Economics and Finance, the Duisenberg School of Finance, and the London School of Economics.
