Abstract

International research workshop Organization Theory Research Group on Institutional theory

Friday september 14th ERIM hosts the international OTREG workshop on Organization Theory, Institutional theory and Actor Network Theory. Institutional theory is now one of the central topics in organization theory as is evident from the attention it receives at major conferences around the world, such as Academy of Management and EGOS. Scholars have focused both on macro-institutional processes as well as micro-institutional processes to understand how and why institutions change, persist or die. While impressive progress has taken place in this domain, questions about the paradox of embedded agency or the dialectic between agency and structure continue to grapple scholars. The presentations in this symposium will highlight several important elements in processes through which social actors engage in transforming, defending, and extinguishing institutions. At the same time, speakers will also talk about important developments and new directions in related fields, such as actor-network theory and structuration theory.

At this symposium, key organizational theorists will be presenting their work in process. And Rudolphe Durand from HEC Paris and Petter Holm from NCFS Norway will guide a discussion on challenges and future directions for institutional theory.
