The Use of Autophotography in Cross-Cultural Research

Speaker

Abstract

The description of cultural differences in social studies is mostly based on the analysis of existing texts, anecdotes or texts developed in interviews. In processing these texts, during the course of analysis, distortion and misinterpretations may occur. The Autophotography method seems to offer unique opportunities to use additional material for cultural comparison. Autophotography requests test persons to take photos on a certain topic themselves. These photos are later used as additional stimuli in the process of an interview. The interviewees are asked to explain in detail why they chose a certain motive, what the photo expresses from their point of view, etc. This method can be used in various research contexts e.g. in bilateral cultural comparison in the Kulturstandard tradition.
