Liquid Modernity, the Owl of Minerva, and Technologies of the Emotional Self

Speaker

Abstract

Historically, management control has been conceived as something exercised through the exercise of surveillance; nowadays, in liquid modernity control is also more internalized and “voluntarily” performed by the productive subject. In consequence, power has shifted from stressing the panoptical to incorporating the synoptical. What is increasingly being developed as synoptical power relies on technologies of the self that, at their frontier, represent the possibility of a fusion of effective computing and emotional intelligence. We are sceptical about the possibilities of enactment of the dramaturgy thus implied.
