A Voyage Through the Northwest Passage

Speaker

Abstract

Gail participated in a scientific journey through the Northwest Passage of the Arctic Archipelago on the ship Louis S. St. Laurent this past summer.  The voyage was organized by The Institute of Arctic Oceans in Canada in support of the International Polar Year. The objective was to use science-capable icebreakers to collect physical, geochemical and biological data as an ocean climate baseline around northern North America from Victoria in the subarctic Pacific to Halifax in the subarctic Atlantic; a ship track of over 15,000 km, to collect data from top to bottom and at biological scales from bacteria to whales. To make this study meaningful to a wider audience, the Institute organized a "Philosopher's Leg" as the ship transited the Northwest Passage. About a dozen people, drawn from industry, science and government participated.  Gail will present highlights of this experience.
