Dyads of Groups: Why Should You Study Them and How?

Speaker

Abstract

Many organizations thrive not only on the performance of separate teams, but also on the close cooperation and coordination between departments and teams. Think for instance of the marketing and production department; they need to coordinate their effort is order to launch a new product. But marketing also has to coordinate with sales and logistics, while production is dependent on sales and logistics too. This dependence between dyads of groups is very interesting to study, but also more complicated than studying teams separately without looking at their intergroup relations. Luckily I have found that MRQAP (Multiple Regression Quadratic Assignment Procedure), a method from Social Network Analysis, meets this methodological challenge.

MRQAP has been used to study a variety of relations between groups, business units, organizations and even sport teams. In this seminar, I will introduce some interesting reference papers, to sketch a horizon of to which fields and for what kind of research questions this method can be applied. Additionally, I will share my experiences of using MRQAP to study dyads of organizational groups. I will go into when to use MRQAP, what kind of data you need and what kind of analyses you can do.

If you are interested to know more about this technique or want to share your experiences, please do attend this seminar. I look forward to learning from each other’s experiences.

The ERIM Phd Seminar Series are dedicated to enhance the methodological dialogue between PhDs and are organised by the ERIM PhD Council.
