Communities of Practice and Vintage Innovation

Speaker

Abstract

The seminar will be focused on the notion of “vintage innovation” and its application in various old technology-based communities of practice. Some communities of practice can resist and react to industry technological change by adopting new technological products (“vintage products”) that extend the lifetime of their old “beloved” products and practices. A number of reasons can explain this behavior and the development of the approach of vintage innovation. The seminar will focus three illustrative case studies of communities of users in which vintage innovation emerged: analog photographers, arcade videogame players and disc jockeys.
