6th Workshop on Business Aspects of Closed Loop Supply Chains

Abstract

Closed-loop supply chains (CLSC) consider all of the activities in the life cycle of a product from design through end-of-life recovery. These chains encompass, in addition to the traditional forward flow of products to customers, the acquisition and return flows of products, reuse and recycling, and the distribution of the recovered products. Key activities include:

  • Designing Products for Reuse
  • Product acquisition and Reverse Logistics
  • Test, sort, grade, and disposition
  • Refurbish (repair, remanufacture, recycle)
  • Redistribution of refurbished products to the market

Although the initial interest in product recovery was driven largely by environmental concerns, subsequent development of sustainable CLSCs has shown that these activities can also be economically viable.

This year’s workshop will have three principal objectives:

(1) stimulate future research on CLSC by bringing together the leading researchers and their graduate students for discussions of current research issues;

(2) expand the scope of the investigation of CLSCs by including researchers and industry representatives with diverse perspectives or with expertise in new technologies related to CLSC;

(3) construct a bold research agenda to address the larger issues of economic and ecological sustainability of CLSCs.
