About Martijn de Jong
Martijn de Jong (1980, Dordrecht) studied Econometrics at Erasmus University Rotterdam between 1998 en 2002 (cum laude). In 2002 he started his PhD research at Tilburg University under supervision of Prof.dr. Jan-Benedict Steenkamp. He obtained his PhD in October 2006 cum laude (dissertation title: Response Bias in International Marketing Research – for which he obtained a prestigious dissertation prize at Tilburg University in 2007). De Jong developed a method to validly compare survey data from multiple countries, without requiring similar response styles of respondents (i.e., respondents’ use of the rating scale, independent of content, might be quite different). Over 2,500 articles have claimed the necessity of having “measurement invariance” before comparing countries substantively, but De Jong shows that this requirement can be relaxed.
