Not only is the opening of the stock exchange in Wall Street a world famous event, it is also a tradition in Amsterdam. The Amsterdam Stock Exchange is the oldest stock exchange in the world. It was founded in 1602 when the VOC was the first company in the world to bring stocks to the market. From Amsterdam the stock exchange spread over the world. In 2000 the Amsterdam Stock Exchange became part of Euronext, and in 2007 the biggest Stock Exchange in the world was created when Euronext and the New York Stock Exchange merged into NYSE Euronext.
