HRH Princess M?xima addresses Christiaan Huygens Award winner Martijn de Jong

During the award ceremony for the Christiaan Huygens Award, <link people martijn-de-jong _self>Martijn de Jong was addressed by Her Royal Highness, Princess Máxima of the Netherlands. In her speech, HRH Princess Máxima referred to De Jong’s research as ‘levelling boundaries between countries, cultures, and scientific disciplines.’

De Jong won the Christiaan Huygens Award the award for his dissertation ‘Response Bias in International Marketing Research’, in which he develops a groundbreaking high-tech methodology to enable cross-national comparability. His work sheds much-needed light on cross-cultural consumer behaviour in an increasingly-globalised world. The Royal Dutch Academy of Science hands out the Christiaan Huygens Award to an economist only once every five years.

During the official award ceremony that took place on October 14, De Jong was addressed by HRH Princess Máxima as well as Nout Wellink, President of the Dutch National Bank, and Dr. Roborgh, Secretary General at the Ministry of Education.

First, there was a lunch at the Christiaan Huygens museum (Hofwijck), where I was addressed by the Mayor of Voorburg, Loek van Daalen from the Dutch National Bank, and the CEO of Shell Holland (who is also chairman of the Christiaan Huygens foundation). After lunch, the official ceremony took place at the old church in Voorburg. Speakers were HRH Princess Maxima, Dr. Wellink, Professor Opschoor (jury) and Dr. Roborgh. There were many politicians, executives, and family. I received very positive feedback from the audience. Professor Gerrit van Bruggen, Professor Berend Wierenga, and associate professor Yvonne van Everdingen were there to represent Erasmus University. This is perhaps the most memorable award I ever received.'
