Entitled Writing about Goals Enhances Academic Performance and Aids Personal Development, it examines how goal-setting contributes to students’ academic performance; how to induce it, and if writing goals out and committing them to paper makes them more effective. The symposium also explores how goal-setting relates to academic performance and personal development. The symposium has also been announced as a showcase symposium by AOM’s Organisational Behaviour (OB) division.

Contributing to the award-winning symposium alongside Dr Schippers will be Dr Ad Scheepers, policy advisor from RSM plus Dominique Morisano from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health at the University of Toronto; renowned American psychologist and a pioneer in goal-setting theory Prof. Edwin A. Locke from the University of Maryland, who chairs the symposium; plus Jordan Peterson from the University of Toronto, who designed the goal-setting exercise, as well as Cheryl Travers, Alistair Cheyne and Raymond Randall from Loughborough University.

The Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management is a gathering of more than 10,000 students, academics, scholars, and professionals of management and organisation studies. The Theme of this year’s Meeting is “The Power of Words”: the effect of words on individuals, teams, organisations, nations and global systems. The panel of reviewers on the selection panel for this award included many former winners, under the chairmanship of Professor Peter McNamara. He thanked Dr Schippers and her colleagues for submitting such a high quality symposium. The award will be presented at the AOM meeting during the MED Past Chairs, Keynote Lunch and Strategy Meeting, Monday August 4, 2014.
