Natural language processing, as a field of artificial intelligence, plays a crucial role in the way machines and humans interact. In the current digital era where a lot of text produced by humans is readable by machines, natural language processing aims to bridge the gap between human communication and digital representation. During the past few years, much attention has been given to natural language processing feeding on recent developments in machine learning (e.g., deep learning) or contributing to the emergence of new machine learning techniques (e.g., word embedding). The applications of natural processing techniques are numerous: machine translation, sentiment analysis, text classification, question answering, argumentation mining, etc., each contributing to the success of various businesses.

Dr. Flavius Frasincar co-edited the proceedings of the 22nd International Conference on Applications of Natural Language to Information Systems (NLDB 2017), together with Ashwin Ittoo, Le Minh Nguyen, and Elisabeth Métais. NLDB is the flagship conference for multidisciplinary research combining the fields of natural language processing and information systems. The proceedings are part of the Springer series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (volume 10260) and are available at https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-319-59569-6. This volume contains the long papers, short papers, posters/demonstrations, and extended abstracts for the keynotes of the 22nd International Conference on Applications of Natural Language to Information Systems (NLDB 2017), held from June 21st to 23rd, 2017, in Liège, Belgium.
