ERIM Alumni Event 2008: Career Issues & Tenure Tracks

Speakers

Abstract

This years’ Alumni event will be devoted to career issues. Friday evening the 24th of October the ERIM Alumni Association will organize a seminar about tenure tracks. Globally, leading universities are increasingly hiring new faculty on the basis of a tenure track agreement. This offers newly graduated PhDs tremendous opportunities for rapid career development in academia. However, at the same time the demands of the tenure track agreement can be tough and success may seem elusive. What are the opportunities for young faculty who start in a tenure track? What are the pitfalls? How to increase your chances of success? This seminar’s speakers are very experienced in the (international) world of tenure tracks and can provide you with the answers to such questions. Prof Steef van de Velde is the chairman of the tenure track committee at Rotterdam School of Management and therefore has hands on experience with tenure tracks at RSM. Prof Harry Barkema is very active in the international world of academia, with stints at INSEAD, London Business School, Tilburg University, and in the board of the Academy of Management. From his experiences he can provide information about international developments and opportunities. After the introductions by both professors, there will be ample time for the participants to ask questions and have a discussion with them. Please join us on the 24th of October at 16:30 in room T3-13. After the seminar, from 18.30, we invite you for drinks in the Siena restaurant (H-building) where you can have informal discussions with participants and presenters.

To register for the seminar and/or evening drinks please send an email to Olga Novikova at onovikova@rsm.nl. Please react before October 15th.

ERIM Alumni portal online!

ERIM and the ERIM Alumni Association team are happy to announce the ERIM PhD Alumni & Careers website: www.erim.eur.nl/alumni.

The website pays special attention to the news about our alumni and new PhD defenses within the ERIM. A special page is dedicated to the achievements of our Alumni: their awards, fellowships, grants, etc. We have also introduced a page featuring ERIM PhD candidates who are in the final stage of completing their theses and are about to join the job market. Another page contains useful career links for both academia and business.

We would be happy to receive your feedback and/or information that we can put online.

We hope to see you all on October 24!
