From Distance to Friction: Progressing on the Cultural Front

Speaker

Abstract

Cultural distance, for decades the dominant construct in the measurement and application of the concept of culture, has been discredited, and for a good cause. The question now is what should replace it, with one suggestion being the concept of friction. Yet, there are many challenges and dilemmas involving the utilization of the friction construct, and some of those bring us to a question we have all conveniently forgotten to ask or just “assumed away”: What is, exactly, the position of culture in the current theoretical frameworks, and, more broadly, what does it say about the direction of the organization and management field as the world progresses towards globalization?
