Abstract
Understanding the risks of catastrophe is the key to build a safety net and resolution plans for the society. With the emerging debate on climate change, we realize that catastrophic risks may not be constant over time. This inaugural address discusses recent developments in extreme value statistics to analyze trends in tail risks. The address also highlights ongoing and future research in this area.
