Ground-breaking research by Ale Smidts and Maarten Boksem of the Erasmus Centre for Neuroeconomics has been recognised with the Insight Scientist of the Year award from the Dutch centre of expertise for marketing professionals, MOA.

In his dissertation 'Hour of Judgment: On judgment, decision making, and problem solving under accountability', Aljaz Sluga reported the results of a series of behavioral experiments designed to shed light on some of the following questions: How should accountability be implemented to elicit optimal performance from individuals? Does scrutinizing the process the accountable individual is using tend to yield more accurate judgments and decisions than focusing strictly on the outcome? Does the answer depend on the nature of the decision environment? Does the answer hold in the domain of problems that call for insightful solutions? What are the cognitive and affective mechanisms that mediate the differences in performance between process accountability and outcome accountability?

In his dissertation ‘Moving Beyond the Why and What Question: How Corporations Achieve Sustainable Development’ Thijs Geradts explored the role of sustainable intrapreneurs, senior managers, and organization design in effectuating a corporate transition toward sustainability. Besides highlighting the important role sustainable intrapreneurs play for corporations to achieve sustainable development, we proposed that sustainable intrapreneurs distinctly advance innovation, alter resource allocation, and manage uncertainty when advancing entrepreneurial solutions to social and/or environmental problems compared to entrepreneurial actors in other contexts.

PhD researcher Gizem Yalcin won the American Marketing Association’s Emerging Scholar Award 2021 for her research in the field of marketing at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM). The American Marketing Association’s Doctoral Student Special Interest Group (DocSIG) annually honours a doctoral student who has displayed exemplary holistic scholarship and exhibits a bright future in this academic discipline.

In her dissertation ‘Coordination & Control in Contemporary Organizations' Jun Xiao explored how power hierarchies and organizational routines are changing, arguing for a grounded approach to understand their implications on people and work. As a result, in her dissertation she provided three accounts of contemporary work for individuals and organizations seeking to understand why new forms of organizing matter and contributes to bridging the extant divide between the practice and study of organizing.

Jaap Paauwe, emeritus professor Organization and HR Management (Erasmus University Rotterdam and Tilburg University), is the first non-American to receive the Thomas A. Mahoney Mentoring Award, which is given annually by the HR Division of the Academy of Management to an individual who has distinguished herself/himself in the mentoring of PhD students.

Financial economist Rogier Quaedvlieg, Associate Professor at Erasmus School of Economics, has been awarded the prestigious annual J.C. Ruigrok Prize by the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities.

In his dissertation ‘Leader-Subordinate Relations: The Good, the Bad and the Paradoxical’ Benjamin Ashlin Korman highlighted the diverse emotional and behavioral effects that leader-subordinate relations can have on focal subordinates and their coworkers. In doing so, the research presented herein reveals the good, the bad and the at times paradoxical effects that leader-subordinate relations can have on an organization’s overall work environment.

In her dissertation ‘Mobile Consumers and Applications: Essays on Mobile Marketing’ Zeynep Aydin reflected both sides of the mobile eco-system by combining novel data sets reflecting the actions of mobile businesses and the reactions of mobile users. Drawing from multiple research streams, this dissertation contributes to various literatures such as mobile applications, user generated content, and new product development. In the broader sense, the findings collectively relate to creating successful products in digital markets and continuous product development.

Associate Professor Chen Li and Professor Peter Koudijs of Erasmus School of Economics have been appointed as members of Young Erasmus Academy, a network of young talented researchers, by analogy with The Young Academy of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Their appointment is for a period of five years.
