Stefan Stremersch appointed to Desiderius Erasmus Distinguished Chair of Economics

Professor Stefan Stremersch (1972) is the first academic to be awarded the Desiderius Erasmus Distinguished Chair of Economics at the Erasmus School of Economics, Erasmus University Rotterdam. The Erasmus School of Economics (ESE) has gained the right, in very exceptional cases, to confer the designation ‘Desiderius Erasmus Distinguished Chair of Economics’ on leading scientists from its ranks. This designation is connected to an existing chair and is awarded for a period of seven years. Through this recognition, the ESE strives to bring about a long-term working relationship with the eminent scientist Stremersch.

Stefan Stremersch is a scientist of exceptional stature. After graduating cum laude in two degree programmes, Stremersch started as a postdoctoral fellow at the ERIM (Erasmus Research Institute of Management) and was subsequently appointed professor of marketing at the Erasmus School of Economics in 2004. He is an extraordinary and innovative talent who has (already) earned international recognition. Stremersch works in the fields of economics, business studies and international marketing. In his research, he establishes connections between microeconomics, health sciences, cultural studies and technology. His quality specifically lies in his combination of the fields of marketing and strategic management. Stremersch also serves as a visiting professor of marketing at the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, USA. Research by Stefan Stremersch – like that focusing on innovation and acceptance of technology – is regularly featured in the national and international press. According to the ‘Economentop’ ranking compiled by the professional journal Economisch Statistische Berichten, Stremersch is one of the top 20 economists in the Netherlands. Indeed, he has an impressive list of scientific publications to his name and is regularly invited to hold keynote speeches at major conferences. The international recognition that Stremersch has earned with his research is evidenced by the frequent acceptance of his articles in leading marketing and management journals like the International Journal of Research in Marketing, the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science and Management Science. He also serves as Editor of the International Journal of Research in Marketing.

Stremersch has been presented with several important awards for his scientific work, including the Maynard Award for the best thesis in the Journal of Marketing. His career has also been honoured with important distinctions like the J.C. Ruigrok Award (for outstanding Young Dutch researchers working in the social sciences – only awarded to an economist once every four years) and the 2004 Research Award of Erasmus University Rotterdam (selected out of all 800 professors of Erasmus University Rotterdam). In 2005, Stremersch was also elected a member of The Young Academy (DJA) of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2006, he was recognised for Excellence in International Marketing by the American Marketing Association.
