"IS research can benefit significantly from cooperating with industry. Not only can one learn about new and relevant problems for our discipline, a field test is also the ultimate challenge for a model or method. It shows us whether our work really meets real-world requirements, and that our profession makes valuable contributions to business practice. Unfortunately, this 'last mile' is very time consuming typically involving the development of software and having to deal with noisy data sets, as well as with intellectual property, licensing and other legal issues. While I believe that it is important for IS research to cooperate with industry, the academic recognition is often low compared to the substantial time invest. The INFORMS ISS Design Science Award is a great incentive to pursue such activities, and we are very grateful to be among the winners of the 2008 award!" Martin Bichler

Awardee: Hsinchun Chen (Department of Management Information Systems, University of Arizona)

Project Title: CopLink

"It is a true honour and privilege to have been awarded the INFORMS ISS Design Science Award for 2008. The recognition by one's peers is valuable confirmation that the work and research are important and relevant. The work I have always valued most in IS is that which has the potential to make an impact on society, that solves real world problems, and that contributes both to our communities and to the education of our students. In my lab, we aspire to develop innovative research, and to provide outreach to our academic, government, and business partners for the melding of organizational management, business intelligence, and information technology. I believe this award tells us we are heading in the right direction, and I truly appreciate the encouragement and inspiration offered by INFORMS." Hsinchun Chen
