Ports in Global Networks: Research Challenges

This talk will provide an overview of research challenges that emerge from sea ports acting in global networks.

First of all, sea ports act as hubs in global logistics networks. Research challenges inspired by recent developments in the design, planning, and execution of intermodal transport services will be discussed. Second, port clusters connect their port community systems to a multitude of trade and supply chain management systems, so they act in global information networks. Special attention will be given to the re-use of information for logistics services among multiple organizations. Third, port organizations participate in global supply chains in which environmental and societal issues play a role, next to economic ones. Research challenges that arise from the design of green tools used by port authorities to improve environmental performance of global supply chains will aslo be discussed.
