Strange Citizens or Migration and Development. The case of Central Europe in the 21st century

Speaker

Abstract

People migrate looking for work, escaping war, avoiding persecution, hoping for a better life for themselves or for their children. How do migrantions influence both the donor countries - say Mexico or Ireland, Italy or Poland, and the host countries - say The United States, Germany or The Netherlands nowadays? What do the young people from the new EU member states jobbing in the older ones win or lose earning their itinerant wages? One third of Polish students search for a summer job abroad, and the vast majority of them try to arrange it their own way. The expected benefits are far more than money only - it is considered to be a kind of adventure. The lecture is to present this micro-scale phenomenon (migrations) and its impact on economy and development.
