Speaker

Abstract

American Professor of Psychology Alice H. Eagly will be presented with an honorary doctorate by Erasmus University Rotterdam on Thursday 8 November 2012 at a festive event celebrating the 99th anniversary of the Dutch university. Prof. Eagly will receive the honour for her authoritative work on gender and leadership.

The celebrations for Erasmus University’s 99th anniversary are being organised by the university’s business and management faculty, Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM). This year’s theme is “Women Mean Business” and an expert debate during the event will explore the reasons why increasing numbers of women are landing top-level positions and female leadership is now getting more recognition, and yet most people prefer to see a man in managerial and executive jobs. Women still encounter many barriers in trying to climb the corporate or organisational ladder.

Alice Eagly is Professor of Psychology, Faculty Fellow at the Institute for Policy Research and Professor of Management & Organizations at Northwestern University in Illinois, USA. The leading psychologist is to be honoured for her trailblazing work in the field of gender and leadership. Prof. Eagly dismisses the frequently-mentioned “glass ceiling” as the factor which holds women back. Instead, she uses the metaphor of a labyrinth in which women encounter many obstacles at all hierarchical levels. Prof. Eagly has been awarded with several honours in recent years.
