Nonconscious Behavioral Imitation and Consumer Behavior

Speaker

Abstract

Very often, people do what other people do. Sometimes we consciously and intentionally imitate those around us, for example when we choose to look and dress like Britney Spears. Most of the time, however, people non-consciously and unintentionally imitate each other. Imitation is an innate and automatic phenomenon. In this talk, I will first address nonconcsious imitation from a multi-disciplinary point of view. Then, I'll focus on the social consequences of nonconscious imitation in general and on intersubjectivity in particular. Finally, I'll present several studies, which illustrate the role imitation plays in consumer behavior and persuasion.
