Transformational Leadership and Team Innovation



Fostering team innovation increasingly is an important leadership function. However, the empirical evidence for the role of transformational leadership in engendering team innovation is scarce and mixed. Addressing this issue, we predict that the effect of transformational leadership and team innovation is mediated by enacted support for innovation and moderated by climate for excellence. Results from a study of 33 research and development teams confirmed that transformational leadership works through enacted support for innovation which in turn interacts with climate for excellence such that enacted support for innovation only enhances team innovation when climate for excellence is high.
