Socially Responsive Supply Chains

Abstract

Emerging economies face the problem not only of growth but also of 'inclusive' growth given widespread poverty. At the same time, companies are seeking new markets as well as low cost sources on one hand but also find themselves having to show they are doing something about such 'inclusive' growth and the environment through their CSR efforts. As such, creating supply chains that meet societal needs but also help companies and entrepreneurs create more profits are a natural solution for meeting the triple bottom line - profits, people and planet -- goals of companies and social enterprises. We call such supply chains as being 'socially responsive' in that they proactively seek to meet societal needs. I provide examples in India and other emerging economies of such socially responsive supply chains are in place as well as where there are opportunities to create these.
