Value pluralism in institutional life: Peril and promise

Speaker

Abstract

Values are a critical part of institutional life and institutional scholars have recently shown a renewed interest in these ideal goods.  What has received less attention is the phenomenon of value pluralism, wherein actors experience multiple values that do not necessarily align (and may in fact conflict).  We suggest that the problem of value pluralism constitutes a “grand challenge” for scholars, leaders, and institutions themselves.  We also suggest that institutional theory is a vital tool that can improve our understanding of this experienced phenomenon and enhance our ability to meet the practical challenges that it poses.
