Case Development Centre at RSM Celebrates One Year since Inception
The CDC is celebrating one year since the inception of the Case Development Centre (CDC). The CDC supports the writing and publicising of top quality teaching cases and notes, and of White papers for both academic and business entities.
This year was a very exciting year for Ilan Oshri, the director of the centre, and Tao Yue, the case writer. During this year, the CDC set up submission and assessment procedures, reviewed numerous ideas for teaching cases and white papers and conducted several workshops with the faculty and students about case writing. Ten quality teaching cases and notes have been written by the CDC and there are several others in progress. Some of the complete teaching cases have been published by European Case Clearing House (ecch)and others have been candidates for prizes in international case writing contests. These cases include:
- Bill Collins and Tao Yue, Negotiating Better Teamwork
- Henk Volberda, ABN AMRO in the Volvo Ocean Race: A Bank Learning to Sail as One Team
- Barbara Krug, Match and Mismatch: The Wahaha-Danone Dispute
- Frank Wijn, The Delicate Quest for Corporate Environmental Sustainability
- Koen Heimeriks and Stephen Gates, One Sheep Leapt Over the Ditch, But Will Wolff Follow? Dow’s Acquisition Programme and the Integration of Wolff Walsrode
- Mark Greeven, ShengYun Yang, Eric van Heck, Barbara Krug, The Smart Business Network of the Alibaba Group: How the Alibaba Group’s Strategy and Implementation in China Is Creating Sustainable Value for Suppliers, Partners, and Customers

We needed to quickly set up our operations and provide services while we designed and built the centre. Even more challenging was the need to convey a clear value proposition to the faculty about our services. I believe we have managed to convince our sponsors of the value we offer. The coming years will bring new challenges in the form of scaling up operations, publishing more teaching cases as well as working with industrial partners’.
And he continues: “While the CDC’s main objective is to help the faculty publish quality teaching cases, we also plan to expand our services by offering writing workshops for MSc programmes, set up collaborations with industrial partners and build an RSM Case Clearing House. So we look to the future with excitement and invite RSM faculty to use our services and get their best material published and in use in class.”
Tao Yue, the Case Writer, comments: ‘It has been an exciting year. Writing cases is not as easy as some may think. We need not only to maintain a steady flow of new cases, but also to make sure each case is original. And we need not only to get each case finished on time, but also to make sure that it is well written. Happily, our customer feedback is most encouraging. Cooperation with colleagues builds up good relations with them, and our old customers come back, giving us many new cases’.
“Developing an excellent teaching case is a great way to transform the lessons learned from our research into the brains of our MBA’s. The Alibaba case shows the potential of doing business in<link erim research centres china_business _blank> smart business networks in a Chinese context. Working with the Case Development Centre has helped us achieving our goals”, says <link people eric-van-heck _blank>Eric van Heck, Professor Information Management and Markets.
