Roodbergen to serve on College-Industry Council in the USA
Dr. Kees-Jan Roodbergen has been appointed as a member of the College-Industry Council on Material Handling Education, which is affiliated with the Material Handling Industry of America. Roodbergen was selected to be the sole representative of the international academia in this North-American council. Initially, he will take up work in two of the council's committees from where he can play an important role to further strengthen the process of interchanging knowledge and ideas between industry and the academic world.
The Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA)
MHIA is the largest U.S. material handling & logistics association representing the leading providers of material handling & logistics solutions. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce and Bureau of Labor Statistics, material handling and logistics is one of America's largest and fastest growing industries. The consumption of material handling and logistics equipment and systems in America exceeds $156 billion per year, and producers employ in excess of 700,000 workers. The College-Industry Council on Material Handling Education (CICMHE)
CICMHE encourages research and sponsors educational seminars and training courses. Through its various programmes and diverse representations of membership, CICMHE facilitates the interchange of information among concerned individuals in industry, and academia as well as in the user community. Its activities also include: Providing research funding (up to $100,000 per year), Issuing the Outstanding Material Handling & Facility Logistics Research Paper Award, Issuing the Outstanding Material Handling Content Award, Organising the International Material Handling Research Colloquium, Organising the Material Handling Teachers Institute, Sponsoring the material handling student design competition.
The field
Material Handling and logistics is the movement, protection, storage and control of materials and products throughout the process of their manufacture and distribution, consumption and disposal. This process involves a broad array of equipment and systems that aid in forecasting, resource allocation, production planning, flow and process management, inventory management, customer delivery, after-sales support and service, and a host of other activities and processes basic to business. Solutions include sophisticated techniques that expedite information flow, including RFID and satellite tracking systems, and the electronic transmission of order and shipping information. These innovations along with traditional material handling and logistics equipment and systems are the solutions that make manufacturing, warehousing, distribution and the supply chain work.
About Kees-Jan Roodbergen
Dr. Kees-Jan Roodbergen is ERIM Member and Associate Professor at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. Next to his new appointment as a member of the College-Industry Council on Material Handling Education, he also serves on the Scientific Advisory Council of the World Food Logistics Organization. Roodbergen has been a visiting professor at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and a visiting scholar at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His solution approaches have been successfully applied at a number of companies. In his academic research, Roodbergen has a diverse interest, ranging from the logistics of temperature-controlled (food) products, human factors in logistics, and facility logistics. He has published in international journals such as Operations Research, IIE Transactions and the European Journal of Operational Research.
