Professor Berend Wierenga receives Royal Honour


On June 15, 2010, Her Majesty the Queen appointed <link people berend-wierenga _blank>Professor Berend Wierenga Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau. Mayor M.J.D. Jansen from Krimpen aan de IJssel awarded the Royal Honour to Professor Berend Wierenga immediately after Wierenga’s valedictory lecture in the auditorium of Erasmus University, Rotterdam.

Professor Wierenga received the Royal Honour as he prepares to retire from his post as Professor of Marketing at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM). As a professor of marketing since 1983, he has done a great deal for the development of high quality academic research in marketing and management. Moreover, Wierenga undertook several successful initiatives that led to increasing professionalism and high quality of scientific research and education in marketing in Rotterdam, the Netherlands and across Europe. As a volunteer, he has also been active in the religious community, politically and for a kindergarten.

Next to this important Royal Honour, Wierenga received the Ad Fontes medal bestowed upon him by the EUR Executive Board. This prize is awarded to people who have made significant contributions to the university. In the words of Rector Henk Schmidt: “You have done more than your share of university community service. You leave behind a thriving community of students and staff.” On behalf of RSM, Wierenga also received the first RSM Honoris Emeritus award. He also was named the first ERIM Honorary Fellow. The Erasmus Research Institute of Management (ERIM) is the research school in the field of management of the Erasmus University Rotterdam – founded by Wierenga 10 years ago.
