ERIM Research Clinic: Leadership: Research Agenda 2011-2020



There is a growing realization that organizational success and organization’s ability to gain a competitive advantage is critically contingent on their effective management of these people. Leaders are the key players in these processes. They are in the position to motivate employees to excellent performance and mobilize employees for the organization’s mission and vision. At the same time, however, they may also be a primary source of conflict and demotivation. Understanding what makes for high performance leadership as well as where leadership can go wrong therefore is of critical importance to successful organizational functioning. In this seminar, I first provide a rough introduction and overview of the field of leadership research. This overview forms the backdrop for the second part of the seminar: an outline of key themes that are on the research agenda in leadership for years to come. The bottom line ambition is to provide novices to the field a feel for what leadership research is about, and novices and more expert researchers alike a source of ideas and inspiration.
