They Should Work Like Us! The Ingroup Projection Model in Organisations: Antecedents, Consequences and Interventions

Speaker

Abstract

People have a tendency to evaluate other cultures according to the standards of the own one and organizational cultures are not an exception. This kind of ethnocentrism results from ingroup projection, which is in the basis of intolerance and conflict. Given the important negative consequences of conflict situations (from relationships between teams or departments to productivity decrease) it is crucial to understand ingroup projection phenomena. I will address why and how ingroup projection arises, as well as the different forms it may take depending on the perceived context. Finally, some research-based tools will be provided on how to intervene towards tolerance and prevent further conflict escalation.
