Talking About Emotions at Work

Speaker

Abstract

Emotions color interactions at work. Research has established that these emotions can shape individual, group, and organizational outcomes. However, despite the known impact of emotions on work outcomes, less is known about the specific behaviors useful for talking about, and managing, the emotions of ourselves and others in the workplace context. In this talk, I will cover three lines of work I have on how to talk about emotions at work, including a review piece, a multi-method paper on how leaders can and should contextualize their emotions for followers, and a new multi-method piece (presented by my graduate student, Christina Bradley!) on how followers can best verbally acknowledge the emotions of their leaders. We will conclude with what we see as the exciting new directions for the study of emotion dialogue and emotion management in the workplace.
