How Our Understanding of Responses to Organizational Change Have Evolved

Abstract

In this talk I will share with you some of my insights from the study of responses to organizational change, focusing on organizational change from the perspective of the change recipient. I will describe how our understanding of recipients’ responses has developed over the years, from “the problem of resistance to change”, to current models that involve more complex conceptualizations of these responses. I will present both earlier and current research about the antecedents of recipients’ responses, including factors within the individual (i.e., dispositions), in the organizational context, and in the process through which change is managed. Time permitting, I will also present a recent circumplex model of behavioral responses to change.
