Bind the Gap: Science and Innovation

Speaker

Abstract

It is now becoming possible to analyze innovation activities with the expansion of computing power and data-sets. I aim to introduce data-driven research focused on analyzing innovation activities with comprehensive datasets, including POS, Design Patent, Product, Financial, Patent, and Scientific Paper databases. In the case of pharmaceutical innovation in Japan, the main study aims at analyzing whether scientific sources of innovation could be traced via bibliographic data of patent and scientific paper. Interviews with star inventors and scientists involved in research and development processes of blockbuster drugs to identify core patent and scientific papers and scientific sources of innovation. The research result indicates that about half of the essential scientific sources of innovation have not been cited in identified core patent and scientific paper.
