Solutions to Taming Desire


The New Year started off with a great deal of buzz and numerous reposts of this news item  and this story which highlight the research of Associate Professor <link people nicole-mead>Nicole L. Mead, Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University and Vanessa M. Patrick of University of Houston. The article The Taming of Desire: Unspecific Postponement Reduces Desire for and Consumption of Postponed Pleasures that was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. “It’s human to give in to temptation. New Year’s resolutions and willpower frequently crumble when up against favourite snacks and drinks… They suggest a novel solution: it’s better to tell yourself you can have it ‘some other time’ instead of ‘no, not at all’.

The Erasmus Research Institute of Management (ERIM) is the Research School (Onderzoekschool) in the field of management of the Erasmus University Rotterdam.
