PhD Track Climate Risk and Sustainable Investing

We are looking for a full time PhD researcher who will perform research in the area of climate risk and sustainable investing as part of a large research grant extended by Netspar to Mathijs van Dijk and Dirk Schoenmaker at the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) and the Erasmus Platform for Sustainable Value Creation.

The finance faculty at RSM is a vibrant and diverse group consisting of leading international researchers. Our faculty undertakes world-class research that is regularly published in the top academic journals. The Erasmus Platform for Sustainable Value Creation is an initiative of RSM. The Platform provides a broad network of several leading academic experts working together with large financial institutions and NGO’s within the financial sector. The aim is to foster thought-leadership, meaningful debate and to accelerate research on sustainable finance.

We are looking for highly motivated candidates that have an interest in undertaking challenging and rigorous research in the area of climate risk and sustainable investing. In particular, our research project funded by Netspar deals with measuring and managing climate risks in the investment portfolios of large institutional investors such as pension funds. Our goal is to assess the characteristics and the overall performance (both in terms of financial risk and return and in terms of impact) of different investment strategies aimed at mitigating climate risks, including exclusion, best-in-class, and engagement.

Besides a background in finance, we also welcome applicants with an education in economics, econometrics, data/computer science, and business (e.g., strategy). A proven affinity with the field of (sustainable) finance is an appealing characteristic of any application.
